I have the DISTINCT privilege to teach my children at home. While I value the time spent together and opportunity I have to impart both academic and Spiritual knowledge, I must admit it is NOT EASY! In fact to be honest it has been much more difficult than I anticipated. I have learned much about myself and about Faith in the process. I was feeling very low by December seriously questioning my ability to effectively teach my children.
In January our Rubies mtg was about schooling options, pros & cons of all types. Many of our experienced mom shared and I have to say it helped me TREMENDOUSLY! I came away with soooo much. One thing many stressed was that no matter what option you decide for your children (homeschool, private or public) the temptation will be to think you should be doing something else. You know. . . the grass is always greener on the other side of the fence! But no matter what you choose it is hard work for the parent! Another thing one mom encouraged for the homeschool moms was to make school as fun as possible. I had fallen too much in the mode of the strict taskmaster. Faith was making great progress, but school had ceased to be fun. One thing I remember from my education classes was to try to incorporate some fun into the school day. Obviously not every lesson can be thrilling and exciting to the enth degree (what teacher has time for that!!) But the effort should be made to break up the monotony. So, I immediately made some changes, and I am happy to say that everyone is happier! I now have school only M-Thurs. I reserve Fridays for special art or science activites and other special things. One time we had our reading class in a tent made of blankets and read by a flashlight w/ a homemade trail mix as a snack. Yesterday the girls danced to the seasons song and when I paused it, whatever picture they were standing on they had to put either on the spring, summer, winter, or fall card. Those are just a couple of things, but my biggest breakthrough came yesterday w/ Faith. Upon the recommendation of Melissa and Molly, I checked out the Bob books from the library. Faith sat on the couch w/ me and read those books one after the other saying in between, "Oh mommy this is fun! I love to read!" What a joy to this mom's heart! I would love to hear what some fun activities you homeschool moms have done! I love exchanging ideas!
We had a marvelous Christmas. When we put away our Christmas decor, we found this santa claus costume. Maybe next year.
These next pictures are the volcano we made (ON FRIDAY!
) The girls loved it so much we must have done it 5 or 6 times. Unfortunately I never snapped a picture of the volcano bubbling over. It was pretty cool!
For Christmas we bought Faith an aquariam tadpole to frog kit. It was an exciting day when she recieved the tadpole!
She did such a great job caring for "Tad" as we named him, but on Tues. he died of unknown causes. She shed many tears for poor Tad. We will buy her a replacement and hope Tad II does better!
